Approaches to Literature: Language and Communication is devoted to the correlation between text and visuals, and how communication varies depending on purpose, audience, and content. Texts are predominantly non-fiction and vary from news to film to narrative nonfiction in order to acquire an understanding of language as a purposeful, communicative medium. A specific focus includes a close look at news and media literacy to promote awareness of media influence and engage in critical dialogue to inform thoughtful decision making. In addition to the critical reading and analysis of texts, the course emphasizes the writing process, speaking for different audiences, researching, and developing grammar and vocabulary.
