Teaching & Learning

Individualized Learning

ASD is committed to academic excellence; providing an international perspective and a comprehensive education; and preparing every student to be future ready. ASD follows the common core and standards-based learning models for classroom instruction and student assessment, focusing on student mastery of concepts and skills.

The Early Learning program (PreK-K2) at ASD is a Reggio-Emilia-inspired, flexible learning environment. Flexible learning spaces in the Elementary School (Grades 1–6) allow for an individualized learning experience where students begin to identify areas of interest. The Middle School (Grades 6–8) utilizes contemporary pedagogy to allow the exploration of individual interests, including Week Without Walls, a week-long educational travel experience distinguished for promoting global and self-awareness. In High School (Grades 9–12) elective and AP courses, online learning, and INSPIRE global trips (cultural, eco-adventurous, or service learning experiences) allow students to dive deeper and prepare for successful futures.

Campus Life

ASD students are engaged every day with learning beyond the classroom. The school provides a wide variety of activities for students, parents, faculty, and staff to foster and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Activities are offered throughout the year in sports, fitness, intramurals, and creative arts. More than 85 percent of ASD students from K1 to Grade 12 participate in extracurricular activities, student organizations, athletics, and clubs. Faculty and staff often advise and coach activities.

Learning and Innovation

Technology is an integral component of learning at ASD for faculty and students. We leverage a wide variety of services and applications across the curriculum. Every Elementary School student has an access to an iPad or MacBook. In Grades 6-12, every student is required to have their own Apple laptop for educational use. The Learning Systems team and coaches support K-12 teachers through a variety of inservice programs, online learning, and 1:1 instruction.

Professional Learning

Professional learning is encouraged and supported through in-service programs, international conference attendance, and graduate-level courses. As part of this program, ASD invites world-renowned consultants to work hand-in-hand with faculty towards continuous growth in their areas of expertise.

I respect the students I work with, and have a great rapport with my colleagues. ASD has made me a better teacher, and moving to Dubai has been one of the greatest decisions our family has made.
