Deema Jony '25, a senior at ASD, has always been curious about the world around her. That curiosity has taken shape in her passion project, Booktok Unveiled, a website where she investigates the effects of trendy media on young audiences. Since moving to Dubai from California in 2023, Deema has used her natural inquisitiveness to spark conversations about the influence of social media and pop culture on adolescents.
Through her website, Deema dives into the world of popular fiction and teen dramas, asking critical questions about how TV shows like Euphoria and Elite captivate young readers and viewers. Deema's goal is to uncover what makes these stories so captivating and how they influence society.
"Adolescents are drawn to narratives that explore unconventional viewpoints of youth, but the stories often distort reality," Deema shares. "I want to understand the psychological, emotional, and cultural effects of this obsession."
Her project doesn’t stop at personal reflections. Deema plans to interview experts in psychology and media studies, creating a platform where research, anecdotes, and expert insights intersect. With blogs that delve into themes like stereotypes, emotions, and aspirations, Booktok Unveiled invites readers to think critically about the media they consume.
Deema credits ASD for nurturing her project, particularly her AP Psychology teacher. "He helped me frame my ideas through a psychological lens and guided me as I prepared my presentation for our ASD parent community. His support showed me the academic perspective behind my work."
Beyond her project, Deema is described by her friends and family as social, adaptable, and audacious—a person who isn't afraid to explore new environments or ask tough questions.
