In the latest of our Faculty Highlight series, we take 5 minutes to get to know Timothy Hendershott.

What is your role at ASD?

Middle School English Language Arts Teacher

How long have you been in ASD?

This is my sixth year teaching at ASD.

Why did you choose to be an educator?

I come from a family of educators. Both my paternal grandparents were educators.  My mother was a first-grade teacher for over thirty years, and my father was a long-time principal. So teaching, helping others, and service have been pillars of my existence for as long as I can remember. I feel blessed to be in this profession.

What is your favorite book/quote/movie?

"Hitch your wagon to a star." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

What is your favorite class or topic to teach in ASD?

The love of reading.  I hope that students take Stephen King's quote with them forever, “Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

Share something that makes ASD special

The facilities are magnificent, but the feeling of community with students, parents, and staff is exceptional in so many ways.  ASD has permanently etched a place in my heart and soul.

Share your favorite ASD memory

I remember walking onto campus for the first time in August of my first year.  Sweat ran down my brow as the blistering heat was pushing 45 degrees or higher.  I looked across at the soccer field at the immaculate, bright green grass and thought, "That grass can't be real.  It's too perfect." So I went over, reached down, and touched the grass's softness and perfection.  This moment was my first realization of what an amazing job all the support staff do at ASD daily.  They're the unsung heroes of ASD's community.
